Paying with cryptocurrency has a reputation for being technical. In practice, the sending part is closer to a Venmo transfer than to anything you'd call trading: you open an app, paste an address, enter an amount, and confirm. The whole operation takes about a minute once you've done it once.

What genuinely trips people up isn't the sending. It's the handful of decisions around it — which coin, which network, where to get the address, and what to do when a number doesn't match. Those are the parts this guide spends its time on, because those are the parts that cost people money. Patriot Labs takes several payment methods, and crypto is one option among them rather than the only one. It's worth being clear-eyed about what choosing it does and doesn't get you, because a lot of writing on this topic oversells it.

Three things genuinely change. Payments settle directly rather than passing through a card network, so there's no processor sitting in the middle to decline a transaction based on merchant category. Settlement is final within minutes rather than provisional for months. And no card number, bank login or account credential changes hands — you're pushing funds out from your side rather than authorising someone to pull them from yours.

One thing changes in the other direction, and you should weigh it honestly: crypto payments have no chargeback mechanism. With a card, you have a dispute process backed by the issuer. With crypto, once a transaction confirms, it's done. That places more weight on dealing with a supplier you're willing to deal with directly — which cuts both ways, and is a reasonable thing to think about before choosing this route over the others.

Notice that none of the methods we accept are reversible. That isn't a crypto quirk — Zelle, CashApp and Venmo transfers are equally final once sent. It's a property of push payments generally.

How it works

The order-request model — why you never send blind

This is the part that differs from a lot of sites, and it's worth understanding before you start, because it changes the order of operations.

We don't post a wallet address on a checkout page and ask you to send to it. Patriot Labs runs an order-request model: you add items to your cart, go to checkout, fill in your details and select a payment preference, and submit. You get an order ID on screen immediately. Then — usually within 24 hours — we reply by email with three specific things:

  2. 2The exact amount, calculated against your order total and confirmed at current rates.
  3. 3The network to send on, stated explicitly so there's nothing to guess.

You send only once that email is in your hand. The extra step costs you a short wait and removes most of the ways a first payment goes wrong: the address reaches you through a channel we control, the amount is settled rather than estimated, and the network is specified rather than inferred.

It also matters for a reason worth stating bluntly. A posted payment address is a target. Sites that publish a static wallet address invite anyone who can alter a page, a cached copy or a search result to substitute their own. Because our address arrives by direct reply to an order you placed, there's no public address to swap. If you ever see a Patriot Labs wallet address anywhere other than an email replying to your specific order — on a forum, in a chat, in a message that doesn't reference your order ID — treat it as fraudulent and contact us before sending anything.

Choosing

Choosing between Bitcoin, Ethereum and USDT

We accept three: Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH) and USDT (Tether). If you already hold one of them, use that one — the differences below are real but modest, and they matter far less than sending correctly. If you're starting from scratch, the differences are worth thirty seconds of thought.

Bitcoin is the safest default for a first-timer, for an unglamorous reason: it effectively has one network, so there's no network decision to get wrong. Every consumer app that sends BTC sends it on the Bitcoin network. The trade-off is that fees rise when the network is busy, and confirmation takes longer than the alternatives.

Ethereum is straightforward if you already hold ETH. Fees on Ethereum mainnet have historically run in the low single-digit dollars and can climb during congestion, which is a meaningful proportion of a small order but negligible on a large one.

USDT has one property the other two don't: it's pegged to the dollar, so the amount we quote can't drift while you're getting ready to send. On a volatile day that's a genuine convenience. The cost is that USDT is the coin where network choice matters most — see the next section, which you should read before choosing it.

A rough rule: if your order is small and you want to minimise fees, USDT on a low-cost network is hard to beat. If you want the fewest ways to make a mistake, use Bitcoin. If you already hold something, use what you hold.

The important part

Networks: the one mistake that really loses money

If you read only one section, make it this one. Almost every story about someone losing crypto in a payment comes down to a network mismatch, and it is entirely avoidable.

Here's the concept in plain terms. A coin and the network it travels on are two separate things. Think of the coin as the parcel and the network as the courier: the same parcel can go by different couriers, and a courier only delivers to addresses on its own routes. Hand a parcel to one courier with another courier's address on it and it doesn't get redirected — it goes nowhere recoverable.

Bitcoin makes this easy because it essentially has one courier. USDT is the opposite. The same ticker — USDT — exists simultaneously on Tron, Ethereum, Solana, BNB Chain, TON and several layer-2 networks. They are not interchangeable. USDT sent on Tron to an address that only exists on Ethereum does not arrive, and in most cases cannot be retrieved.

The practical differences between those networks are large. Published comparisons put Tron (TRC-20) at around three seconds to finality for roughly a dollar or less, Ethereum (ERC-20) at a few dollars up to ten with settlement in the region of thirteen minutes, and Solana at well under a cent in about a second. That spread is exactly why senders are tempted to pick a cheap network on their own — and exactly why doing so without matching our address is how funds get lost.

The rule is simple: send on the network stated in our email, and no other. If your app doesn't offer that network, don't improvise — reply to the email and we'll issue an address on a network you can actually use. That reply costs you a few hours. Guessing can cost you the order.

As a sanity check, the shape of an address tells you which family it belongs to:

Note the trap in the middle row: an address beginning 0x is valid on several networks, and they share the same format. Matching the prefix is not sufficient on its own — you still have to select the specific network we named. This is the single most common way a technically careful person still gets it wrong.

Getting set up

Getting the coins in the first place

Broadly there are two kinds of place to hold crypto, and the distinction matters for one practical reason.

Custodial apps — the mainstream brokerages and payment apps — hold the coins on your behalf. They're the easiest way in: link a bank account or debit card, buy a dollar amount, done. You don't buy a whole coin; you buy however much you want and the app converts it to a fraction.

Self-custody wallets hold keys on your own device. They give you direct control and generally the widest network support, at the cost of you being solely responsible for your recovery phrase.

Either works for paying an order. If you're new, a custodial app is the sensible starting point — but there are two frictions that catch first-timers at exactly the wrong moment, and both are easy to sidestep.

First, buying is not the same as being able to send. Many custodial platforms require you to complete an identity check before they'll enable transfers out to an external address. It's a one-time step and often quick, but it isn't always instant.

Second, funds bought with a linked bank account may be held until the purchase clears. You'll see a balance, but the platform may not let you withdraw it for a few days. Debit-card purchases typically clear faster.

The fix for both is the same and takes no effort: buy your crypto a day or two before you intend to pay, not in the same ten minutes. Platform policies vary and change, so check your specific app's rules rather than assuming — and if you hit a hold, just reply to our payment email and let us know; a short delay is not a problem.

One more compatibility note. Not every consumer app supports every network. Some platforms have historically credited USDT only on certain chains, and some send on a narrower set of networks than a dedicated wallet would. Before you settle on USDT, confirm your app can send on the network we specify. If it can't, Bitcoin is the reliable fallback — every app that does crypto at all can send BTC.

Sending the payment

Once our email is in front of you, the send itself is short. The care goes into the checks, not the taps.

  1. 1Open our payment email and keep it visible. Everything you need is in it: address, amount, network.
  2. 2Copy the address — never retype it. Use the copy button or scan the QR code. Hand-typing a wallet address is a needless risk, and a single wrong character sends funds nowhere.
  3. 3Paste it, then verify the ends. Check that the first four and last four characters in your app match our email exactly. This takes three seconds and catches clipboard-tampering malware, which is a real category of attack that swaps a copied address for the attacker's.
  4. 4Select the network we specified — not the default, not the cheapest, the one in the email.
  5. 5Enter the exact amount. Not rounded, not approximate.
  6. 6Check where the fee is coming from. This is the one that bites: if you use “send max” or “send all”, most apps take the network fee out of the amount, so we receive slightly less than the invoice. Either enter the amount manually and let the fee be charged on top, or buy a couple of dollars more than your total so there's headroom.
  7. 7Review and confirm. Your app will show the fee and the total before you commit. Read that screen — it's the last reversible moment.

Some people like to send a small test transaction first. For a large order that's reasonable; for a routine one it means paying a second network fee for reassurance you can get more cheaply by checking the first and last four characters. Your call.

Afterwards

After you send: what a confirmation is

The moment you confirm, your transaction is broadcast to the network and sits in a queue. A confirmation means it's been included in a block and accepted by the network — each subsequent block adds another confirmation and makes reversal progressively more implausible.

Rough expectations: Bitcoin produces a block roughly every ten minutes, so a first confirmation usually lands in that window and can take longer when the network is busy. Ethereum settles fully in around thirteen minutes. USDT on a fast chain can be final in seconds.

Your app will give you a transaction ID (a TXID or transaction hash) — a long string of letters and numbers. Keep it. Pasting it into a public block explorer for that network shows you exactly where the payment is, independent of both your app and us. It's the receipt that nobody controls.

You don't need to do anything with it in the normal case. We watch for the payment and follow up by email once it clears. But if something seems slow, sending us the TXID lets us see precisely what you see, which turns a vague back-and-forth into a thirty-second answer.

Troubleshooting

When something goes wrong

Most of these are recoverable. The general principle: tell us before you try to fix it yourself, and never send a second payment until you've confirmed what happened to the first.

You sent slightly less than the invoice. Almost always the “send max” fee problem above. Email us — a small shortfall is usually trivial to settle, and we'll tell you whether it needs topping up at all.

You sent more than the invoice. Tell us and we'll either credit the difference against the order or return it. It isn't lost.

The price moved between our quote and your send. This applies to BTC and ETH, not USDT. We quote against a window rather than an instant, so ordinary movement is already absorbed. If there's been a genuinely large swing, or hours passed before you sent, reply to the email and we'll requote rather than leave you guessing.

You sent on the wrong network. Contact us immediately with the TXID. Be aware of the honest position here: depending on which networks were involved and who controls the receiving address, this is sometimes recoverable and often isn't. We'll tell you straight which case you're in rather than leave you hoping. This is the failure worth spending your attention on preventing.

The transaction is stuck unconfirmed. On Bitcoin this usually means the fee was set too low for current demand. It typically resolves on its own as congestion clears. Some wallets offer fee-bumping (replace-by-fee) to speed it up. Don't send a replacement payment — you'd risk paying twice.

Nothing arrived and the explorer shows nothing. The transaction likely never broadcast. Check your app's activity screen; if there's no TXID, no funds moved and you can safely try again.

Honest limits

What crypto does and doesn't do for your privacy

Crypto is often described as anonymous. It isn't, and you should have an accurate picture rather than a flattering one.

Bitcoin and Ethereum run on public ledgers. Every transaction is permanently visible to anyone, including amounts and the addresses involved. The addresses aren't labelled with names, which makes the system pseudonymous — but pseudonymous is a much weaker property than anonymous, and chain analysis is a mature field.

On top of that, if you bought your crypto through a mainstream custodial app, you completed identity verification to open that account. The platform knows who you are and where you sent funds.

So what does it actually give you? Real, narrower things: no card number is transmitted or stored anywhere, no third-party payment processor is involved in the transaction, and no merchant descriptor appears on a bank or card statement. Those are meaningful. They are not the same as invisibility, and any vendor telling you otherwise is selling you something. Our privacy policy covers what we hold on our side.

Practicalities

Refunds, disputes and keeping records

Because crypto payments can't be charged back, the resolution path for any problem runs through us directly rather than through a card issuer. If something's wrong with an order, get in touch — that's the mechanism, and it's why we'd rather answer a question before you send than untangle one after.

Keep two things for any order you pay this way: your order ID from checkout, and the TXID from your wallet. Between them they identify your payment unambiguously on both sides. A screenshot of the confirmation screen takes a second and has settled more than one question.

Two order details worth knowing before you check out, since they change the amount you'll be sending: shipping is a flat $20 and free on orders over $200, and volume pricing applies automatically — 10% off when you buy three or more of the same item, and 20% off orders over $1,000. Do I need any crypto experience to pay this way?

No. If you can send money in a banking app, you can do this. You install one free app, buy the amount your order needs, and send it to the address we email you. Budget about ten minutes the first time and a minute or two after that.

Is paying with crypto anonymous?
